Visiting Theatre@41
Where is the theatre?
How do I get there?
On foot - From inside the city walls, the theatre is three minutes walk from the end of Goodramgate. Cross Lord Mayor’s Walk and walk up Monkgate, then the theatre is on the left-hand side just next to The Ark Church.
By bus - The 12, 13 and 14 buses stop almost outside the theatre. Other bus routes stop in the city centre, from where it will be between a 5-10 minute walk.
By car - You can park in the Monk Bar car park, which is a three-minute walk from the theatre. Directions and more details on the York Council website.
If you have a Blue Badge, you can park in the resident parking bays directly in front of the theatre.
Physical accessibility
If you require the support of someone to attend the performance you can book an "accessible seat and companion" ticket.
If you have specific access requirements such as an aisle seat, step-free seat or wheelchair space, please email boxoffice@41monkgate.co.uk.
We have a lift for people to use to access the theatre space. Make yourself known to a member of staff or volunteer when you arrive, and we will help you access the theatre.
Is there a passenger lift in the building?
Yes. There is a lift from the ground floor to the first-floor auditorium. Unfortunately, the balcony can only be accessed by steps.
If you think you will need the lift you can let us know in advance by emailing boxoffice@41monkgate.co.uk. Please note our lift is back stage so we will be unable to admit audience members by the lift after the show has started until a suitable break in the performance. This may be the interval.
How many wheelchair spaces are available in the auditorium?
Can you book wheelchair spaces online?
Seat Accessibility
We want everyone to feel comfortable in our theatre, so we’ve listed the dimensions of our seating and details about arm rests. If you think you would need an accommodation to be made please let our Box Office know in advance of the day of the show by emailing boxoffice@41monkgate.co.uk.
Seats are freestanding and have no arm rests. They can be separated from other seats if required. They are 42 cm wide, 44cm deep, with no arm rests. The aisleway is 51cm deep from the seat back.
What time do the auditorium doors open?
Our auditorium usually opens 30 minutes before each performance starts, giving you plenty of time to find your seats.
What time does the show finish?
As soon as we know a show's running time we add it to our website and social media feeds so do check there.
How old do you have to be to come to the theatre by yourself?
Each show has a recommended age. If the show age is appropriate, children under the age of 16 years must be accompanied by an adult. Children aged 16 years can come to the theatre without an adult but cannot be responsible for younger children.
Is there a bar and what are the bar opening times?
Yes. We have a fully licensed bar. The bar is situated in the auditorium and opens 30 minutes before each performance and during the interval.
Does a baby/toddler need a ticket?
Children up to 18 months old who can sit in their parents’ laps can attend for free and will not need their own seat. Children who are older will need a ticket for their own seat. Please check individual performances for details of any special ticket prices for children.
Do you have Accessible performances for Blind and Deaf / Hard of Hearing Audiences?
Details of any BSL (British Sign Language) interpreted performances for Deaf / Hard of Hearing Audiences will be available for each production. We are working hard for funding to introduce Captioned performances and infrared facilities for some Theatre@41 productions.
